Season 5, Episode 7 - It's a funny old job...
aired 4 April 2025
Moaning again… Why would anyone live in London, and who on earth would drive around it? Ross, of course! Why’s the Scottish contingent so tired? A few days of teaching, perhaps? There’s not much to moan about, but these two certainly manage it! From Bunny heaven, through badger hell, to deer dread, and ending on f#@*ing foxes – the duo are back at it. They also revisit the topic of dog attacks – always a hot topic, given how much it pops up in the news and on social media. Dog safety and responsible parenting are passions for the team at GaGD, and of course, Lez and Ross don’t shy away from having a good moan about the state of society and the impact of social media. Why stop there ? They even have a go at people who listen to podcasts and music while out and about, risking being run over or, worse, attacked by a serial killer. There's some serious talk about safety and the Imabi App, definitely worth a listen, if you can bear it!

Season 5, Episode 6 - How to Re-home Your Husband
aired 21 March 2025
From the Council House to the Countryside via Canine Karaoke with Di Stevens 🐾 Forget Guard Dogs…this podcast delves into everything Gundog, Gundog and more Gundog! Field Trials, Labradors, and Working Tests, to Show Dogs and much more! Ross and Lez are joined by the amazing Di Stevens, with a career that starts with breaking horses and discovering the Labrador breed, and now has made remarkable strides in the world of Gundogs, achieving success across multiple disciplines. Starting with a couple of Chocolate Labradors in the breed ring, she then moved into the working field, qualifying dogs in multiple disciplines. The London contingent often finds discussions about birds, killing animals, and life beyond the M25 somewhat distasteful… and interestingly, so do many Gundog enthusiasts! This sparks an intriguing conversation about the ethics of Country Sports and how we all must remain true to our moral compass. As always, the conversation circles back to nature vs. nurture, and finding the right dog for the job. Why can't you enter the Grand Prix in a Fiat Panda? Di's passion for her discipline is evident as she keeps her fingers firmly in every pie related to Gundogs. Prepare yourself for some eye-opening insights into the often-overlooked weaknesses of breed judges. We also discuss how Gundog training in the UK and Europe has improved significantly in recent years.Thankfully, our understanding of living with, and working alongside, our companion dogs has evolved—it's all about the relationships we build.

Season 5, Episode 5 - PASSION
aired 7 March 2025
What does it take to be a dog behaviourist? It sounds like a fun job, doesn't it? But is it really fun, or is it more fascinating, emotionally draining, and even dangerous? Perhaps it’s not all about dogs after all! What qualities and skills are required? What exactly is your 'true north'? Be mindful of the wobbles—they happen to all of us who care. Being a chameleon and adapting your behaviour to mirror those you’re working with, as well as dressing as a consultant rather than a kennel worker, is key. Getting people on your team and delivering often unwelcome advice is no easy feat. How you present yourself—both in terms of demeanour and attire—affects the trust and confidence others place in your abilities. Understanding the stages of learning and building relationships is essential. Learning and gaining knowledge—qualifications versus practical experience. Picking up poo, mopping floors, making tea, and not getting paid for any of it…perhaps that’s where the real learning happens. Learning to understand body language—and recognising how anatomy and physiology are inextricably linked to dog behaviour and training—is crucial. Taking every opportunity—or not—and discovering the many other, often unexpected, skills required along the way. If you’re thinking of becoming a canine behaviourist, or if you’re already on that journey, this is an essential and thought-provoking listen.

Season 5, Episode 3 - Dog Safety - something's got to give
aired 7 February 2025
The unusual moany greeting…it takes 2 seconds to get on to moaning about the weather…that sets the scene for a talk about dog safety. Ooh…did someone mention ‘positive only training’? Bribing dogs ignoring dogs and growing into behaviour issues! Neuroplasticity…”it don’t work like that!” Self-rewarding behaviours and turning around and ignoring the dog jumping up whilst your back is left gushing with blood! It’s a bit of a moany one…but the dog world is a mess and we can’t escape that…despite the wave of 'Science-based' bullsh…erm methodology. Sniffy walks Vs appropriate physical exercise. What actually makes dogs happy? It’s certainly not what some people think or promote! Fatal dog attacks and the Malinois…2 babies killed. The rise of the Cane Corso the questions about the XL Bully. The North and South divide are both just perplexed by the stupidity and naivety of people. They chat about the Dog Safety Education Executive (DogSEE.org) and the #puthecameradown campaign. Unfortunately we don’t live in Disney land and we have to keep it real! And it’s not just aggression and bites that can cause injuries or issues…how can people be educated with so much crap on the socials?! Breed Books and telling the truth. Go in with your eyes open… not all dogs are the same. They have more questions than answers…but something has got to give. They may somewhat overegg the pudding at times, but that’s based on the horrors that they have seen (lucky for you...some of the conversations about dog related fatalities were kept off the Podcast…Lez and Ross didn’t need the images in their head and so were kind enough not to pass that on to you!) They close with recent bite stats and hospitalisations and reiterate never to be complacent. All doom and gloom…get your public liability insurance and support your local rescue charities rather than the big ones who fuel the problem.

Season 5, Episode 2 - Slobber in Seattle
aired 6 February 2025
A Chat with CIDBT Tutor Diane Kunas from Seattle. From a first meeting in Merthyr Tydfil 20 years ago to completing her Master’s degree and returning stateside, Diane Kunas has had quite the journey. We delved into some fascinating insights about dog ownership in Seattle and across various US states. The discussion uncovered surprising similarities between the UK and the US, from our shared obsession with “fur-babies” to training methods and attitudes towards our four-legged friends. Topics ranged from balanced training vs. force-free approaches to dog laws, breed-specific legislation (BSL), and—of course—the all-important subject of oodles of Doodles. Diane’s passion for Bull breeds, especially the slobber - prone Dogue de Bordeaux, shone through. She’s left a trail of drool across Seattle, no doubt turning heads and winning hearts. We also touched on industry regulations—or the glaring lack thereof—and how these impact the world of dog training. It's clear that both sides of the pond share plenty of common ground, even if the accents are a little different!

Season 5, Episode 1 - For Shits and Giggles
aired 10 January 2025
Happy New Year from this miserable duo! They’re clearly struggling to muster any exciting New Year vibes and seem as though they can hardly stay awake. Mostly flat, but there is some useful information about puppies teething and transitioning into adulthood. Don’t you ever get bored with just walking and feeding dogs? Walking dogs on leads, paying for their own dinner, and working on films with dogs—such is life. They discuss upcoming podcasts, which should(hopefully) be better. The cheese debate rumbles on, alongside the amazing skill dogs have for spitting out tablets. Bone broth conversations are enough to bore anyone to tears, while Lez—the master of the English language—gives Ross some tips on speech before moving on to competitive obedience. Find a purpose for training, or you might not bother at all. 2025 goals ? Oh, there aren’t any!Well, maybe to get titre testing done. Leptospirosis – 2(possibly 3), and 4, Crufts, CLA, and that’s a wrap!

Season 4, Episode 15 - Something to raise your eyebrows at (or wiggle your ears 😅)
aired 20 December 2024
After a short break, they’re back with a Christmas Special! Don’t get too excited… there’s nothing particularly special about it. There isn’t even the usual wonderful intro music! Team London apologises for the lack of an intro and outro, while Team Scotland couldn’t care less. She’s a natural - born leader, who doesn’t need jingles and angles! Lez gives the game away by revealing that we recorded this on 3rd December! Why she was already wearing her Christmas earrings probably deserves some commendation.Meanwhile, the London contingent remained as “enthusiastic” as ever and made no effort at all. After a quick chat about Faelan – Lez’s new retriever pup – along with a moan about veterinary fees. There’s even some decent information on dogs’ well - being, covering liver support, genetics, health scores versus the reality of living with dogs, and how we sometimes “kid ourselves” into seeing what isn’t really there. There’s also a brief(and entirely unnecessary) insight into the bizarre physical facial abilities of this strange duo before wrapping up the episode – still without any music! Naturally, communication problems persist across the South/ North language barrier… Gundogs and Guard Dogs will return properly in January 2025, without scratchy sheets, barefoot shoes, or any other nonsense…we hope!
Runtime: 51 mins
Season 4, Episode 14 - Spit or Swallow
aired 11 October 2024
The end of season 4. After they set the rules for the conversation... both Lez and Ross then promptly ignored them! This episode kicks off with a kerb consultation, a wee - ridden sofa, and a coffee that would please the Bisto kids. The Scottish contingent brings up the spit or swallow conundrum and the pair discuss why you’d never eat cake during a consultation! The conversation wanders to a Staffie on a boat and being locked in London apartments and disorientated.A sensible moment of safety discussion regarding personal safety before analysing relationships between clients. The Londoner throws in some helpful advice about rehoming partners. An aggressive Cane Corso that reminds us to stay safe and follow best practices! Shutting up a Schnauzer and the difference between client views and the professional assessment and how owners adapt and cope with the behaviour of their dogs. The truth about Spaniels from a behaviourist perspective. What are the scariest dogs to work with…ooh hold on, there’s a chat about handling wolves in the middle along with a lesson about Apron’s and jaw - sucking(WTF). Wolf dogs.Wolf hybrids, making the wrong call, making the right call and always glad to be on the way home! Luckily, that’s the last of the season, so you have a break from this nonsense! Happy Halloween, Happy Christmas and the GaGD duo will be back soon with more nonsense peppered with some wonderful guests!

Season 4, Episode 13 - Take Another Breath: Dog Law with Trevor Cooper
aired 27 September 2024
In this episode, we dive into the world of dog laws and legislation with Trevor Cooper from Cooper & Co solicitors. Despite the usual hiccups and a slightly chaotic introduction (thanks, Ross! 😂), the conversation quickly becomes a must-listen for any dog owner or enthusiast. Trevor Cooper, the leading specialist in dog law for England and Wales, sheds light on both criminal and civil laws affecting dog owners. He shares the differences between a solicitor and a barrister and offers a compelling insight into his journey to becoming a prominent figure in this field. For those who recall, we revisit the significant impact of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991—a piece of legislation that has brought about devastation and controversy since its inception. If you're a dog owner, this episode is essential. We discuss the prevalence of relationship breakdowns and custody battles over dogs, reminding listeners to choose their partners wisely! While there are a few positives to note in the prosecution trends under the Dangerous Dogs Act, the reality remains grim—it’s largely a postcode lottery. And for the love of your canine companion, don’t rely on your dog to protect your home, vehicle, or garden. As the episode concludes, we affirm that Breed - Specific Legislation(BSL) is ineffective—something many of us already knew. The laws currently in place are outdated and unfit for purpose, and it’s clear the Dangerous Dogs Act has been a failure from the start. We need a fresh approach, and it’s time for all dog professionals to unite. We also tackle some listener questions and leave you with a crucial reminder: make sure you have adequate third - party liability insurance. And if you don’t have a dog yet—think twice before getting one!

Season 4, Episode 12 - When the light leaves
aired 13 September 2024
A chat about inappropriate laughter is quickly followed by the topic of pet bereavement. Maybe a hard listen, probably a harder conversation for Lez and Ross to have and to put out there. How long does this gut - wrenching feeling last for? How long will it take to smile instead of cry at the memories? Making very hard decisions when it comes to the love of your dogs and what happens when we don’t have the ability to make these choices. The impact that these wonderful animals have on our lives and the worry of losing our best friends can be overwhelming. It’s never any easier, but we may be more prepared to do the last display of love for our dog. Some practical as well as emotional conversations about the last breath, the cremation / the burial and how we move forward. If you are able to listen, please do. If you need to share with anyone who needs it, please do. Thank you to the GaGD team for putting this out there and to Lez and Ross for sharing their experiences in the hope it may benefit others.

Season 4, Episode 11 - This is the worst part
aired 30 August 2024
A flawless start as usual with more lessons in English language from Lez. The nonsense chat covering the weather, recent workshops and other drivel leads the way to discussing living with the convalescent dog. From the conventional spay to cruciate ligament ruptures, hygromas, ruptured bladders and epilepsy. The emotional drain on owners and the strain of caring for dogs after illness or injury. The thought of doing it maybe harder than the reality in some cases ?! A conversation about the huge microchip needle, bone damage, the stoic nature of dogs and the importance of raising your dogs as individuals and creating the ability for contentedness when alone. A difficult topic leading the way to an even more difficult conversation next time about when we lose our beloved canine companions.
Runtime: 53 mins
Season 4, Episode 10 - Pinocchio
aired 16 August 2024
A reflection of lockdown. The southern aspect can’t recover from his initial faux pas of mentioning the lack of guests for this episode!A brief conversation about British Summertime and wet feet leads on to a pretty non - dog related reflection of lockdown. We originally started this podcast during the pandemic, just to make some distraction and provide some relief from the difficult ‘storm’ in which we all found ourselves in…despite being in many different vessels! The strange new language that we had to learn…social distancing, bubbles, shielding, sanitising, and getting used to the new normal! Washing shopping, touching unknown dogs, socialising dogs, long term affects on us and our dogs. Eat out to help out…then get back in!Be kind…actually don’t bother!Common sense gets lost in Google apparently.Cruelty in the name of kindness, and the rather depressing result of pandemic puppy buying. Luckily Lez gives us some Japanese tutoring in regard to a lonely mouth and Ross provides expert insight into the use of a flannel, to save panic buying toilet rolls!Give this one a miss…normal service will resume shortly!
Runtime: 50 mins

Season 4, Episode 8 - Summer Holidays
aired 19 July 2024
Summer Holidays! Dad’s Chair! Sunscreen! Another clumsy start without someone having their microphone on?! 🤷♂️ The usual conversation about the joys of ageing and other delights along with a brief coffee spillage, an unwanted guide to Glasgow’s annual lockdown thing and then on to dogs and children. The school holidays are upon us and as much as they try and stay upbeat, with over 60 years combined work with dogs, safety for Lez and Ross is always paramount! Starting with pregnancy(they managed to swerve conception) through to your 7 or 8 year old…how should we be living with dogs ? ! Preparing for a baby, bringing the baby home, crawling and toddling stages.A rant a bit about the socials and the nonsense and DANGEROUS posts with dogs and children. There are glimmers of positivity and sharing ideas about the wonderful relationships that are possible between children and dogs, but true to their ethos, common sense and safety rules the day! It’s often 50 / 50 with managing children and managing your dog and observing body language from all parties and acting appropriately!Another language lesson from the multilingual Mrs Graham, prior to culminating in wishing Ross a Happy Birthday by ruining all of his cake ideas!
Runtime: 54 mins
Season 4, Episode 7 - Pretty in Pink
aired 5 July 2024
Oops, a bit of a burpy start from the Londoner, that seems to send an over-tired Lez into hysteria. Once calmness is regained, this covers the role of the Professional Canine Behaviour Practitioner & Trainer (or whatever your job title is) Naturally, a rant or two ensues about social media and the modern wave of dog trainers and how to actually spend some quality time with your dogs. All we want is to create balance and truly happy dogs…which is what we do (and yes we call out the keyboard experts who know very little about dogs). Don’t mention hierarchy, paperwork or clients in tears…oh sorry, we did… remember don’t over-complicate it…if you can raise a child, you’ll probably do ok with a puppy...and yes you can say no to both(or is that either ?).Create some clarity, harmony and live in peace with your dog. Lez acts as the question master to bring things back on track…amazing that she has the time, between rattling gates?!(ha ha Ross). The reality of dog behaviour problems, rehoming as an option and the dangers of not telling the truth.Ultimately the hideous UK Dog Law trumps it all. Bad things happen to good people…as always keeping it real, but with a smile and a sneeze, a burp or two…and we are so old that we are no longer looking for answers that don’t exist…just say No! 🤣

Season 4, Episode 6 - Running Puppy Training Classes
aired 21 June 2024
The Northern Aspect managed to turn her microphone on this week...after a nudge! The usual moan about the joys of ageing including nasal waxing and generally getting hairier! A catch up which no one is interested in including running classes under the Golden Arches is followed by a look at running puppy classes. Do you have the right knowledge? What's the difference between adult dog classes? Where do you train? Allowing interaction and causing more damage than the positives you create! Puppy training to perfection...how to be the best that you can be.A puppy party or a puppy education ? !A holistic approach to raising a sensible dog via owner education and breed specific knowledge. A brief technical issue where the Londoner froze...a quick chat about dog law and equipment for puppies. The 5 minute exercise rule explored...exercise Vs socialisation / habituation. Managing people is way harder than managing dogs! Sensible rules around the house for psychological or physiological development.Nature and nurture - creating neutrality and raising the adult dog that you are aiming for. Anyway...that's a bit of it. Enjoy (or not)?!
Runtime: 54 min
Season 4, Episode 5 - Sam Swift tells us all about Proflax
aired 7 June 2024
The usual clumsy introduction and the Scottish contingent (mentioning no names) had a microphone malfunction (user error!). Moody Bitch comes to mind…not because of the microphone error, but because we are joined in this episode by the wonderful Sam Swift from Proflax Natural Superfood Supplements. A fascinating insight into the benefits of holistic principles and approaches supporting physical and physiological issues in dogs. Where and why Proflax started, and looking at the mind, body and spirit. Naturally, we focus on Training and behaviour and how these superfood supplements can support some of the work that we do, but as dog lovers, owners and canine professionals, we look at all of the products available to support optimal health in our dogs. An interesting conversation about synergy and absorption of the products, bio-active compounds and so, so much more! If you don’t regularly listen to this podcast…listen to this episode and give any relevant products a try…in consultation with Proflax.

Unusually, we quickly move on to the scheduled dog topic of training classes and how, when and where to start and all of the considerations that need to be taken into account. As always, Lez and Ross are ‘kinda’ on the same page, but on slightly different paragraphs! 😂 Working dog classes VS pet dog classes, selecting a venue, the reality of indoor and outdoor courses, insurance companies, films and handouts, session planning and course planning, banning kids, working around school holidays, contracts, leadership…the rules of individual classes (you’d be terrified to attend either Ross’s or Lez’s classes🫣) A chat about vaccines in regard to temperament formation, what to include in your tool kit, how to start off your class to create cohesion and maximum success. A brief insight into energy and deference, keeping conversations open and empowering clients…be open, honest and adaptable and get paid! 💷. We hope that you enjoy…with love from freezing Scotland and the Costa del London! 😎
Runtime: 49 min
Season 4, Episode 3 - SORRY FOR THE UNSCHEDULED INTERLUDE
aired 10 May 2024
After an unplanned little break…they are back! 👏🤙 Once we'd got past a blonde microphone moment from the Scottish contingent…it’s brought back by the Londoner who is managing expectations (we know your expectations aren’t that great), we discuss managing risks. What, why and where do you walk your dogs? Dodgy taps and on to the topic of slip leads, flexi leads and awful people in the park. Why are people so thick ? ! 🤷♂️ Cognitive decline, hounds of the Baskervilles, dogs in schools 😱 Then it's on to the scheduled matter of dog training classes. Naturally there is a pronunciation lesson regarding the Maremma. The KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme, dogs balls, rosettes, rubbish, FCI Obedience and general dog chat thrown in! Enjoy, or turn off at your earliest opportunity. 🤷♀️🤷♂️🫣
